4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

6And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

7Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? if any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.

8For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:

9That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.

10For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.

11Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.

12For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

13But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.

14For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:

15Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,

4The weapons we fight with(A) are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power(B) to demolish strongholds.(C) 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,(D) and we take captive every thought to make it obedient(E) to Christ. 6And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.(F)

7You are judging by appearances.[a](G) If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ,(H) they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do.(I) 8So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us(J) for building you up rather than tearing you down,(K) I will not be ashamed of it. 9I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive(L) and his speaking amounts to nothing.”(M) 11Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.

12We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.(N) When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 13We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us,(O) a sphere that also includes you. 14We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you(P) with the gospel of Christ.(Q) 15Neither do we go beyond our limits(R) by boasting of work done by others.(S) Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow,(T) our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand,
